Sovann Macha
The Cambodian Savann Macha dance is a classical performance that tells the love story of Hanuman, the white monkey general, and Savann Macha, the golden mermaid princess. As Hanuman builds a stone bridge to rescue Sita, Savann Macha and her mermaids remove the stones. When they meet, they fall in love, and she helps him complete the bridge. The dance symbolizes harmony between land and sea through graceful movements and expressions.
In performance, the Savann Macha dance combines delicate, fluid motions with stylized gestures of Khmer classical ballet. Dancers wear ornate costumes—Hanuman in a white monkey mask and bodysuit, and Savann Macha in golden attire with a mermaid-like tail. The choreography highlights grace and emotion, capturing their conflict and romance. Accompanied by a traditional pinpeat orchestra, the dance entertains while preserving Cambodian mythology and artistic heritage.
